Trinidad y Tobago: Keith Rowley se convirtió hoy en el séptimo primer ministro del país
Keith Rowley se convirtió hoy en el séptimo primer ministro de Trinidad y Tobago tras jurar el cargo en el edificio Queens Hall de esta capital.
Durante la ceremonia, Rowley, candidato del Movimiento Nacional Popular (PNM) y triunfador en las elecciones con 23 de los 41 escaños del Parlamento, agradeció al país por su victoria y puso énfasis en los jóvenes.
Me gustaría instar a nuestros ciudadanos a tomar un poco menos de la parte superior y dejar un poco más en la parte inferior para los más jóvenes, dijo durante la toma de posesión.
Asimismo, prometió que en los próximos cinco años de su administración se esforzará por servir al país en la medida de sus posibilidades.
Al acto asistió también el presidente de las islas, Anthony Carmona, así como militantes del partido gobernante, diplomáticos y funcionarios.
Rowley nació el 24 de octubre 1949 en la isla de Tobago y egresó de la Universidad de las Indias Occidentales como especialista en vulcanología.
Fue senador en el período 1987-1990 y dirigió los ministerios de Agricultura y Recursos Marítimos y Terrestres, de Planificación y Desarrollo, de Vivienda, y de Comercio e Industria, entre otros cargos políticos.
Regional leaders hail new TT PM
Regional leaders yesterday congratulated Prime Minister-elect Dr Keith Rowley and the People’s National Movement (PNM) on their victory in Monday’s General Election.
Chief among them was Prime Minister of St Lucia, Dr Kenny Anthony and Foreign Minister of The Bahamas, Fred Mitchell.
Anthony said, “This election is another triumph for democracy in our region. From all indications, it was a highly competitive campaign but largely peaceful.” “Undoubtedly, the road ahead will be difficult and complex,” Anthony added. “Trinidad and Tobago, like other countries in the region, has to confront the emerging economic realities especially with the declining fortunes in earnings from the energy sector.” St Lucia’s PM noted his Government shares a common vision with TT about a “wide range of issues” in the region and said he looks forward to working with Rowley on the “common causes of our region.” “I wish Dr Rowley and his team the best and look forward to a continuation of the deep, close and special relationship Saint Lucia shares with the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago,” Anthony stated. Honorary Consul of The Bahamas to TT, Dr E Monica Davis, yesterday issued a brief statement on behalf of her country’s Foreign Minister, Fred Mitchell.
Davis said Mitchell had extended congratulations to Rowley and the PNM “on their election to office…
on behalf of the government of The Bahamas.” She added,“Mr Mitchell said The Bahamas looked forward to continued cooperation with Trinidad and Tobago in working on matters of mutual interest.”
