St Lucia workshop to address regional food and nutrition security
Caribbean food and nutrition security officers from across the region will be meeting in Saint Lucia from June 25 – 26 to participate in a regional food and nutrition security coordination and implementation workshop.
This workshop is being organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, in collaboration with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Secretariat with complementary support from the government of the Brazil.
The workshop is aimed at identifying priority actions of the regional food and nutrition security action plan and the national food and nutrition security policies and action plans (FNSAPs), which were prepared with FAO assistance over the past two years.
Participants will define efficient and effective institutional mechanisms for implementing the FNSAPs. They will also make recommendations on priorities to focus on and strategies for collaboration, information sharing, communication, resource mobilization and capacity building directed at meeting the goals set.
Best practices and lessons learnt among member states in implementing their national food and nutrition policies and action plans will be shared. Policies and governance mechanisms that have been successfully applied by governments across Latin America, especially Brazil, will be explored in terms of their relevance and applicability in the Caribbean for addressing food and nutrition security challenges.
The goal of the workshop is to develop a road map and implementation strategy at national, sub-regional and regional levels for the next two years.
Once implemented, the food and nutrition actions plans will contribute to reducing the region’s food import bill and improving the health and nutrition status of Caribbean people
