New poll predicts ALP victory

The Barbados-based Caribbean Development Research Services (CADRES) is predicting that the main opposition Antigua Labour Party (ALP) is on track to win the June 12 general elections.

CADRES Wednesday released the findings of its poll in three opposition held constituencies which it described as the weakest based on the results of the 2009 general elections.

CADRES said that it also intends to poll the three “weakest” seats held by the ruling United Progressive Party (UPP) of Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer.

“It is our contention that these six seats are effectively the most marginal for both parties and either parties success in these would be indicative of a likely victory overall,” CADRES said.

The pollsters found that the ALP is maintaining its position in the St. Mary’s North, St. John’s Rural East and St. John’s Rural South constituencies.

It said an analysis of the polls also show that the ALP improving its positions in these constituencies from three to seven per cent.

“CADRES is of the opinion that these individual swings demonstrate a general trend in the election which supports the contention that the electorate is moving towards the ALP and away from the UPP which would mean that the ALP is unlikely to lose any seat it currently holds,” CADRES said.
