Arrestan a ex Primer Ministro de Curazao, acusado de lavado de dinero
Former Curacao prime minister arrested
Former prime minister of Curacao, Gerrit Schotte, was arrested on Tuesday morning. Also arrested by the authorities in connection with a criminal investigation codenamed ‘Babel’ was Schotte’s domestic partner, Cicely van der Dijs (36).
According to the public prosecutor, Schotte and van der Dijs are suspected of forgery and money laundering.
There has been an ongoing criminal investigation in relation to Schotte since the disclosure of dubious financial transactions by the politician.
There were several police searches conducted on the island at the end of 2013, including at Schotte’s house, his party office and parliament office.
Immediately after the raids there was speculation in the media about a connection with the investigation into the murder of local political leader Helmin Wiels; however, according to the prosecution, the searches had nothing to do with the Wiels case.
Curacao authorities had previously launched a civil inquiry into the policies that Schotte promoted as prime minister from 2010 to 2012. That case is still pending.
