Scores of National Housing Corporation employees attached to depots across the island were among the first batch of workers terminated by government Friday.
They are among the 3000 public sector workers government says will be retrenched.
Friday was the deadline announced by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart two weeks ago after the January 15th deadline was postponed.
Former carpenter, Ricardo Holder says when he and others turned up at the Wildey, St Michael depot, they were given orders not to commence work.
Affected employees included carpenters, masons and labourers.
Meanwhile training for Barbadians who may be affected by looming job cuts in the public sector is high priority for the National Union of Public Workers.
President, Walter Maloney is seeking to reassure these Barbadians that their relationship does not end when a member is retrenched.
He tells CBC News that the NUPW has a responsibility to get that individual back into the workforce, whether as an employee or employer.
And the Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados is calling for a meeting of the full social partnership.
CTUSAB’s general secretary, Dennis Depeiza says once the meeting is convened, a plan of action can be developed to ensure growth for Barbados.
