Restrictions coming as Ja enters COVID community transmission phase

Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Christopher Tufton, has declared that Jamaica is moving into a new phase of COVID-19 in the country, namely the community transmission phase.

This he said followed meetings with the ministry’s technical team and the Pan American Health Organization.

The minister said this means the transmission of the virus can no longer be easily traced from one person to the other.

“The concern for the COVID-19 is now islandwide,” the minister said.

He was speaking at a digital COVID-19 press conference today.

He said Jamaicans should assume that everyone they come in contact with has the virus and should take on the individual responsibility of wearing masks and following protocols.

The minister noted that over the next six to eight weeks, the population may see a steep rise in the COVID cases reported. He said more people are expected to seek medical attention in public and private institutions.

Tufton said this new phase of virus spread may mean more effective measures to reduce spread of the virus to protect the vulnerable population.

He said health teams are currently examining protocols and will issue new protocols soon. The minister said measures will be introduced as early as Monday, September 7, and could include:

– Increased curfew restrictions islandwide (7:00 pm to 5:00 am daily)
– Stay at home orders for the elderly
– Re-emphasis on work from home orders in the private and public sector
– Further tightening on restrictions on public gatherings.

Dr. Peter Phillips Accepts Responsibility for PNP Blow-Out at the Polls As He Demits Office

Embattled President of the beleaguered People’s National Party, PNP, Dr Peter Phillips, has initiated the process to demit office.

Dr Phillips made the announcement during a hastily arranged media conference at the party’s 89 Old Hope Road Headquarters earlier today.

He told the media conference that he has advised PNP Chairman, Fitz Jackson, that the National Executive Council be convened to make arrangements to elect a new party leader as soon as possible.

The NEC is the PNP’s second highest decision making body.

Stevian Simmonds reports:

Dr Phillips had told the media yesterday, that if his party lost the General Elections, he’d resign as President and also as Member of Parliament for St Andrew East Central.

Last night his party lost more than fifty per cent of the seats it won in 2016 General Elections and barely held on to several others including Dr Phillips’ East Central St Andrew constituency, where 28- year-old Jodian Myrie lost by just over a thousand votes to the seven-term MP.

Dr Phillips says he takes ultimate responsibility for the party’s poor performance at the polls.

He says the NEC will determine a timetable for the selection of a new party president.

But, he says until that decision is made he’ll continue his duties as party president.

Dr Phillips also thanked the voters and the workers of the party.
