Presidentes de Guyana y Surinam dialogaron sobre la explotación conjunta de gas y petróleo
Los presidentes Guyana y Surinam quieren estrechar lazos en el sector petrolero
El presidente de Guyana, Irfaan Ali, y su homólogo de Surinam, Chandrikapersad Santokhi, estudiaron este miércoles iniciativas que contribuyan a mejorar la colaboración entre estos dos territorios de la Comunidad del Caribe (Caricom) en el sector petrolero.
Ali mantuvo una reunión en Georgetown con Santokhi, de visita oficial en Guayana, en la que repasaron además áreas de interés común para los dos países, entre las que es prioridad el desarrollo del sector petrolero en la región.
“Es una visita muy importante. Nos hemos comprometido como vecinos a trabajar juntos en diversas iniciativas, algunas muy transformadoras, por lo que queremos reforzar lazos y que Surinam también sea un actor importante en el sector del petróleo y gas”, dijo Ali en declaraciones a medios locales.
Ali subrayó que los dos países tienen poblaciones pequeñas, desafíos comunes y oportunidades de desarrollo similares para el futuro en el área energética.
El presidente Ali indicó que las áreas clave para la colaboración incluyen además infraestructuras, transporte, comercio, seguridad, agricultura y eliminación de barreras para el movimiento de ciudadanos.
“Es una amplia gama de temas que tenemos en la agenda”,aseguró el presidente de Guyana.
La de Santokhi sigue a la visita del presidente Ali a Surinam en noviembre del año pasado, cuando los dos mandatarios lanzaron la Plataforma de Cooperación y Diálogo Estratégico Guyana-Surinam (SDCP, en inglés).
El Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y Cooperación Internacional de Guyana informó en un comunicado que los dos mandatarios revisarán los avances logrados hasta el momento bajo ese mecanismo en las áreas de política exterior, medioambiente, salud, infraestructura y transporte, agricultura, inmigración, aduanas y seguridad.
El comunicado indica que los dos presidentes también discutirán temas prioritarios en la agenda de Caricom, así como las repercusiones económicas y sociales de la pandemia de la covid-19 en sus países.
“Este compromiso sostenido entre los presidentes Ali y Santokhi es testimonio de su visión compartida y compromiso de converger las energías colectivas en beneficio de los ciudadanos de ambos países y de la región en su conjunto”, concluye el comunicado.
Framework set for ‘fruitful’ bilateral discussions with Suriname – President Ali
Guyana’s President Dr Irfaan Ali and Surinamese President Chandrikapersad Santokhi and Government officials from both sides are scheduled for talks from this morning.
The Presidents and their Foreign Affairs Ministers have already engaged in early morning discussions, while all the visiting officials are expected to meet with their counterparts later in the morning for a plenary session.
Today is the second day of a four-day Official Visit by the Surinamese delegation, which includes President Santokhi, the First Lady Mellisa K. Santokhi-Seenacherry; Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation (BIBIS), Ambassador Albert R. Ramdin; Minister of Natural Resources, David Abiamofo; Minister of Agriculture, Animal and Husbandry and Fisheries, Parmanand Sewdien; Minister of Public Works, Raid Nurmohamed; Minister of Transport, Communication and Tourism, Albert E. Jubithana; Managing Director of the State Oil Company Suriname and Advisor to the Government of Suriname, Annand K.R. Jagesar and several technical staff.
POSITIVE START
On Tuesday evening, at a cocktail and informal dinner reception, the two Presidents briefly met.
In an invited comment, President Ali pointed out that he was happy for the informal session and said that he was anticipating productive meetings.
“We have a very elaborate agenda we’re working on. One that covers many areas: infrastructure, trade, agriculture, oil and gas, collaborations and finding ways in which we can enhance the prospects of both economies, and even looking at ways the economies can integrate, be more competitive and bring more opportunities to the people of both countries.”
OPPORTUNITIES FOR COLLABORATION
President Ali said that he was also pleased with the fact that representatives from both members of the Guyana and Suriname private sector were able to make the initial connection, which will enhance their opportunities to interact during the next few days.
“And we, as leaders, have to facilitate that by creating the right environment, the right policy mix that would ensure that the private sectors [of both countries] are the real engines and drivers of growth and development. So I think the framework has been set for a very productive and fruitful couple of days in which I’m sure many decisions will be made in the interest of the people of both countries.”
The President assured that both Heads of State will continue to collaborate for the economic, social upliftment and the development of the citizens from both countries.
