Caricom se prepara para su 39ª cumbre presidencial en Jamaica

MEETING SUMMARY
The Thirty-Ninth Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will take place at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, Montego Bay, Jamaica on the 4 – 6 July 2018, under the Chairmanship of the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Hon. Andrew Holness.
An Opening Ceremony will be held on Wednesday 4 July from 4:00 pm (Jamaica time). The Conference will welcome its newest Member, the Prime Minister of Barbados, Hon Mia Mottley, who was elected to office following the country’s May 24 General Elections. The Conference will also welcome back Prime Ministers Dr Hon Keith Mitchell of Grenada and Hon Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda who were reelected to office following general elections held on 13 March and 21 March respectively. These Heads will address the Opening Ceremony along with the outgoing Chairman of the Conference, President Jovenel Moise of Haiti; the incoming Chairman, Prime Minister Holness; and the CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque.
Heads of Government will meet in Plenary and Caucus on 5 – 6 July to deliberate on matters of importance to the Caribbean Community, including measures impacting the implementation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), Crime and Security in the Region and emerging geo-political developments which can have an impact on the Region’s growth prospects.
The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has 15 Member States – Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Guyana, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago, and five Associate Members – Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Chair of the 39th conference of heads of government
Prime Minister of Jamaica, The Most Honourable Andrew Holness will chair the Thirty-Ninth Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, Montego Bay, Jamaica, on the 4 – 6 July 2018.
Prime Minister Holness assumes the role of Chairman of CARICOM from 1 July 2018 until 31 December 2018. He succeeds outgoing Chairman, HE Jovenel Moise, President of Haiti, whose six-month term began in 1 January 2018.
Prime Minister Holness has Lead Responsibility for External Trade Negotiations in the CARICOM Quasi-Cabinet.
Media to get preview of upcoming CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting
A Press Conference on the upcoming CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting will be held today, Monday 2 July 2018, from 11:00 am Jamaica time (12 noon Eastern Caribbean time)
CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque will speak to the media on the critical issues which the Heads of Government will address during their 4-6 July Meeting. These are expected to include building post hurricane disaster resilience, security issues, the CARICOM Marijuana Commission’s final report, making the CSME more effective, and Jamaica’s relations within CARICOM and CARIFORUM.
The Press Conference takes place at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston from 11:00 a.m. Jamaica time (12:00 noon Eastern Caribbean time).
Presidente de Cuba Díaz-Canel será invitado especial en Conferencia de Caricom
El presidente de Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, será uno de los invitados especiales de la 39 Reunión Ordinaria de la Conferencia de Jefes de Gobierno de la Comunidad del Caribe (Caricom), reseñó el portal web de Prensa Latina.
El evento tendrá lugar en la ciudad Kingston, capital de Jamaica del 04 al 06 de julio y agrupará a unos 200 funcionarios extranjeros, pues los 15 Estados miembros y los gobiernos asociados confirmaron su presencia.
En conferencia de prensa, la ministra de Asuntos Exteriores del país anfitrión, Kamina Johnson Smith, precisó que el otro mandatario homenajeado será el presidente chileno Sebastián Piñera.
“Damos la bienvenida a ambos líderes con los brazos abiertos y esperamos recibirlos aquí”, expresó la Canciller.
La Conferencia de Jefes de Gobierno es el órgano supremo de la Comunidad del Caribe y determina y proporciona su orientación política.
Este cónclave será el primer evento organizado por el primer ministro de Jamaica, Andrew Holness tras asumir la presidencia de la Conferencia el próximo 1 de julio.
La Comunidad del Caribe (Caricom) es un organismo subregional que tiene como objetivos favorecer la integración regional entre los países del Caribe, a través de la unión económica y comercial; la coordinación de la política exterior de los Estados miembros, reseñó el portal web de esta instancia.
Además, las naciones se comprometen a cooperar en diversas áreas de interés, entre las que destacan salud, educación y cultura, comunicaciones y relaciones industriales.
Los Estados miembros son: Antigua y Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belice, Dominica, Granada, Guyana, Haití, Jamaica, San Cristóbal y Nieves, Santa Lucía, San Vicente y las Granadinas, Surinam, Trinidad y Tobago, el territorio de Montserrat.
Presidente Piñera y su par cubano son invitados a cumbre de Caricom
El Presidente Sebastián Piñera y su par cubano, Miguel Díaz-Canel, fueron invitados a la Cumbre anual de la Comunidad del Caribe (Caricom), que se celebrará del 4 al 6 de julio en Kingston, capital de Jamaica, informaron este domingo fuentes oficiales.
“Le damos la bienvenida a ambos líderes con los brazos abiertos y esperamos su llegada”, dijo en una conferencia de prensa la ministra de Asuntos Exteriores de Jamaica, Kamina Johnson Smith.
“Ambos tendrán la oportunidad de involucrarse con otros jefes de Estado en el contexto del foro, y esperamos fortalecer nuestras relaciones con ambos países”, agregó la ministra.
Johnson Smith, no obstante, dijo que otros 200 funcionarios extranjeros, así como los 15 países miembros del organismo y gobiernos asociados confirmaron su asistencia a la cita.
Entre los temas más destacados que se discutirán en la cumbre, serán la criminalidad y la violencia, el manejo de desastres, el cambio climático, así como el futuro Mercado Único y de Economía de Caricom (CSME, por su sigla en inglés) en la zona.
Creada en 1973, Caricom está integrada por Antigua y Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belice, Dominica, Granada, Guyana, Haití, Jamaica, Montserrat, Santa Lucía, San Cristóbal y Nieves, San Vicente y Granadinas, Surinam, y Trinidad y Tobago.
