Instalan en Barbados Centro Regional del Caribe sobre el Clima
Barbados acogió la sede del nuevo Centro Regional sobre el Clima (RCM, por sus siglas en inglés), considerado el primero de su tipo en el hemisferio occidental, informó hoy el secretariado de la Comunidad del Caribe (Caricom).
El organismo, aprobado por la Organización Caribeña de Meteorología (CMO), quedó abierto en la sede del Instituto Caribeño de Meteorología e Hidrología, en esta capital.
La idea de un centro de ese tipo fue presentada ante la Organización Meteorológica Mundial (OMM) en 2009 auspiciada por los países de Norte, Sur y Centroamérica y el Caribe, respaldada un año después por la CMO y sancionada finalmente en mayo pasado.
Para su funcionamiento sostenible el organismo necesita de recursos provenientes de los gobiernos del área, advirtió el director ejecutivo de la Agencia para el manejo de los desastres y emergencias, Ronald Jackson.
Regional Climate Centre established in Barbados
Barbados is now home to the first Regional Climate Centre (RCC) in the western hemisphere.
The centre, which is housed at the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) in Husbands, St James, was financed to the tune of US$5 million by the United States Agency for International Development.
United States Ambassador to Barbados and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States Linda Taglialatela noted the importance of having such a centre in the region.
“In the past two decades, the Caribbean has experienced several natural phenomena, including floods, droughts, and hurricanes, which can threaten economic growth. Also, the region presently accounts for seven of the world’s top 30 water-scarce countries, and Barbados is in the top ten of that list,” she said.
