Prime Minister Freundel Stuart left the island today to participate in a number of events being hosted by the High Commission in London to celebrate Barbados’ 50th Anniversary of Independence.

The members of his delegation are: Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office Sonja Welch; Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Cecile Humphrey; and Executive Personal Assistant Evette King.

Stuart will attend a reception tomorrow evening at Lancaster House, where he will engage with the Barbadian Diaspora in the United Kingdom, the diplomatic community and Friends of Barbados.

primeministerfreundelstuartOn Friday, he will visit Keble College, Oxford University, where he will join officials at a commemoration ceremony to recognize the outstanding service of the late Sir James Cameron Tudor, KCMG, one of the Caribbean’s most influential diplomats and politicians. Sir James read for a Degree in Modern Greats at Keble College, and, in 1942, he became the first black person to be elected President of the Oxford Union.

Sir James served as the Minister of Education when the Democratic Labour Party assumed office in 1961, and on the achievement of Independence in 1966, he became the first Deputy Prime Minister of Barbados. He also served as Minister of Foreign Affairs; as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom; High Commissioner to Canada; and as the Permanent Representative of Barbados to the United Nations at New York.

Later that evening, Prime Minister Stuart will rename the Chancery as Barbados House. The Chancery is located at No 1 Great Russell Street, close to Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Street.

In addition, he will reflect on the life of the Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow, during the book launch for “Fathering a Nation”, at the Mission.

An Independence Awards Gala for the Barbadian Diaspora will be held at the Savoy Hotel on Saturday and Stuart will deliver the feature address.

The Prime Minister returns homr on Monday, October 31.
