Venezuela donates 300 houses to Dominica; President to visit

Venezuela has donated 300 houses, known as ‘petrocasas,’ to Dominica to go towards those affected by Tropical Storm Erika and the President of that country, Nicholas Maduro, is expected to visit Dominica to symbolically hand one over.

Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, said on Tuesday that one the weekend the structure for one of the houses was brought to Dominica.

“We expect the President of Venezuela to come to Dominica on Saturday where we will have the symbolic handing over of this one home, but of course, making a pronouncement on the 300 hundred homes that will be built for those affected by Tropical Storm Erika,” he stated.

He said the first fifty houses are expected to be in the country in the next couple of weeks and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Housing will advise cabinet how and where they will be erected.

“So we trying to move as quickly as possible,” Skerrit said.

Petrocasas are Venezuelan family houses built in mass production and are largely used in rural areas under the South American country’s public housing program. They are made from PVC materials produced by the country’s oil industry, hence the name Petrocasa (Oil House). They can be built in ten to 12 days.
