Exxon’s oil find likely worth US$40B
An Exxon Mobil Corp. discovery off the coast of Guyana may hold oil and natural gas worth 12 times the nation’s entire economic output.
The Liza-1 well, which probably holds the equivalent of more than 700 million barrels of oil, may begin pumping crude in as few as five years, Raphael Trotman, Minister of Governance, said in an interview Monday.
The prospect would be on par with a recent Exxon find at the Hadrian formation in the Gulf of Mexico, and would be worth about US$40 billion at today’s international crude price.
Guyana produces no oil and its gross domestic product of US$3.23 billion in 2014 ranked between Burundi and Swaziland, according to the World Bank.
Exxon, which has a market value of US$341 billion, has declined to provide an estimate for Liza-1 since describing the discovery as “significant” in a May 20 statement.
“A find of this magnitude for a country like ours, which sits on the lower end of the scale of countries in this hemisphere, this could be transformational,” Trotman said. “From my sense, from speaking to experts outside of Exxon, it has to be something in excess of 700 million barrels.”
Exxon, which began drilling the well in March, said it found a 295-foot (90-metre) column of oil- and gas-soaked rock in a subsea region known as Stabroek Block. The well is 120 miles (193 kilometres) offshore and 5,710 feet beneath the sea surface.
The discovery may foretell a revival for the Irving, Texas-based company, which has been stung by three consecutive years of declining production and slowing reserves growth.
Exxon’s exploration failure rate worsened to 39 percent last year from 33 percent in 2013, according to a February filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
“We’re encouraged by the results of this first drilling exercise,” Exxon spokeswoman Lauren Kerr said in a telephone interview. “We are continuing to evaluate the additional potential of the block.”
Kerr declined to comment on Trotman’s 700 million-barrel estimate.
Exxon is expected to post its lowest profit since 2009 for the second quarter when it announces financial results on July 31, according to the average of 11 analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

El Parlamento Latinoamericano capítulo Venezuela aprobó por unanimidad un acuerdo en respaldo de las acciones del presidente Nicolás Maduro Moros en defensa de los derechos de Venezuela sobre el Esequibo, apoyando la pronta designación del Buen Oficiante por parte de la ONU, para resolver el diferendo con Guyana.
El presidente del Parlatino, Ángel Rodríguez, resaltó la importancia de la decisión de los miembros del Mercosur, para convocar una reunión especial de la Unión de Naciones Suramericanas, Unasur, a fin de tratar el problema.
“El presidente de Guyana, David Granger, actúa como un rehén de la Exxon Mobil. Se ha puesto al margen de la legalidad al defendiendo un laudo que fue nulo e irrito, tal como ellos mismo lo admitieron en 1966, cuando firmaron el Acuerdo de Ginebra. Debe rectificar y respetar el derecho internacional”.
Indicó que el Mandatario nacional ha relanzado de manera vigorosa la diplomacia de paz, para contrarrestar las intenciones de Exxon Mobil que pretende crear un conflicto bélico de carácter multinacional en la zona, con el propósito de atacar la integración latinoamericana y caribeña, así como aniquilar a Petrocaribe.
Recordó que la fuerza militar de Estados Unidos y sus aliados de la OTAN siempre están prestos a intervenir con su maquinaria guerrerista en conflictos que involucran reservas petroleras o minerales estratégicos.
“Exxon Mobil pretende crear un precedente nefasto en la solución de diferendos en la zona. Incentivando la codicia, busca que los Gobiernos o líderes de los pueblos otorguen concesiones en condiciones leoninas a las multinacionales energéticas, que les garantizarán con su poder militar y paramilitar la propiedad del territorio”
El Presidente del Parlatino aplaudió el respaldo que recibió este acuerdo por parte de la oposición que hace vida en la institución, puesto que la unión nacional le imprime fuerza a los esfuerzos que está haciendo el Ejecutivo nacional para ejercer su soberanía plena sobre el Esequibo.
