Former acting Trinidad and Tobago president dies in US aged 85

Former acting President of Trinidad and Tobago, Joseph Emmanuel Carter, died on Wednesday in Miami, at the age of 85.

Carter who was also a former President of the Senate, was acting as President during the terrorist attack of 1990 and signed a purported amnesty document, in relation to the attackers.

In his tribute Trade, Industry, Investment and Communication Minister Vasant Bharath said Carter will be remembered as the face and voice of calm in a time of upheaval and will always stand as an exemplary citizen.

In a release on Thursday, Bharath described Carter as “a true patriot who stood tall with the people of our country at a time when leadership and calm was most needed.”

Bharath described him as “a true gentleman who exemplified the grace and dignity of public office.”

“His passing is a sad moment in our nation and we extend our sincerest condolences to his family and relatives. We wish them God’s speed in this very sad time.”
