US and Jamaica could partner on renewable energy projects – Congresswoman Clarke
United States Congresswoman, Yvette Clarke, says the American Government could benefit from a partnership with Jamaica on alternative energy projects.
“Jamaica has become a leader in the development of alternative energy resources and I’m hopeful that the US will learn from their example and partner with them in becoming leaders in sustainable energy in this region,” she said.
Congresswoman Clarke made the comment as she welcomed Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr Peter Phillips, as guest lecturer of the 10th annual Caribbean International Network (CIN) Lecture Series on Wednesday (October 29), at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem, New York.
She said Vice President Joe Biden has expressed an interest in Jamaica’s development of alternative energy resources.
She added that there would be collaborative talks between the Governments of Jamaica and the United States to forge this partnership.
Congresswoman Clarke said that with the country’s natural resources, a young population, and an excellent system of primary, secondary and tertiary education, Jamaica has a unique opportunity to develop its economy based on trade with North American countries and other nations around the world.
“As a leader of the Caribbean Caucus in the House of Representative, I have keen interest in the development of Jamaica and will continue to work on strengthening the ties between Jamaica and US,” she pledged.
She pointed out that there are millions of first and second generation Jamaicans in the United States, who are interested in investing in the island and “we have a responsibility to develop their interest into action.”
