OAS And Saint Kitts And Nevis Sign Agreement For The Model General Assembly Of the Organization In the Caribbean Nation

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis today signed a memorandum of understanding by which the Caribbean country will host a Model OAS General Assembly (MOAS) from October 22 to 24.

The Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, welcomed the initiative through which students of the region become familiar with the work of the Organization and its member states. «It is a good exercise in practical politics and international relations, and a great example of how the Organization works,» he said about the event.

The head of the hemispheric Organization highlighted the importance of the MOAS and noted that a many of the participants in previous models later became officials of the institution or even representatives of their respective countries to the OAS.

For her part, the Permanent Representative of Saint Kitts and Nevis to the OAS, Jacinth Lorna Henry-Martin, expressed her «absolute satisfaction on behalf of Saint Kitts and Nevis to sign this memorandum allowing us the honor of hosting in our beautiful federation the students of the Hemisphere.» The MOAS, she added, is a way of integrating these young students into the OAS family.

Ambassador Henry-Martin stressed that the event will allow students of Saint Kitts and Nevis to interact with their peers from other countries in the Hemisphere. This activity «is also a signal to students, especially from CARICOM to understand that they are a part of a larger family.»

The signing ceremony was held at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, and was attended by the Chair of the Permanent Council and Permanent Representative of Saint Lucia, Sonia Johnny; the OAS Assistant Secretary General, Albert Ramdin, and representatives of OAS member states.
