Suriname joins Islamic food security organisation
Suriname, one of two countries in the Western Hemisphere belonging to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), on Tuesday in Conakry, Guinea, where the 40th meeting of OIC foreign ministers is being held, acceded to the Statute of the Islamic Organisation for Food Security (IOFS), the newest specialized institution of the OIC.
Suriname joins eighteen other OIC member states as founding members of the new OIC executive institution for coordinating and implementing OIC policies on agriculture, rural development and food security. The other founding members are Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Djibouti, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Iran, Kazakhstan, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Palestine, Sierra Leon, Somalia, Sudan, Turkey, Uganda, and Union of Comoros according to an OIC press release on Tuesday.
According to the OIC, IOFS aims at providing expertise and technical knowhow on the various aspects of sustainable agriculture, rural development, and food security as well as mobilizing financial resources for developing agriculture and enhancing food security in OIC member states.
The IOFS will be headquartered in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Dr Anwar S. Lall Mohamed, Suriname’s ambassador-at-large and coordinator of OIC affairs, is in Conakry attending the OIC meeting on behalf of foreign minister Winston Lackin, who is in South Africa.
