Food security, rural development main focus at 12th Caribbean Week of Agriculture

President Donald Ramotar will be delivering the feature address at the official launching of 12thCaribbean Week of Agriculture at 7:00pm at the Guyana International Conference Centre (GICC), Liliendaal.

This year, Guyana is partnering with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to celebrate World Food Day, which will be held on October 16. It also joins other countries in the region in commemoration of the 12th Caribbean Week of Agriculture.

Speaking at a post-Cabinet press briefing at the Office of the President, Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon today said that food security and rural development will be high on the agenda for discussions by Caribbean officials, some of whom are already in Guyana.

The HPS noted that the state of Guyana’s agriculture, which is evidence of the resurgence of Guyana as the ‘bread basket’ of the Caribbean, will continue to absorb public and regional attention.

“The Jagdeo Initiative and its accomplishments since it was crafted by the heads, would also be of interest, as regional governments, private sector bodies and investors have made and are planning to make investments of large-scale proportions in the vast agricultural lands of Guyana,” Dr. Luncheon stated.

The 12th Caribbean Week of Agriculture is being held under the theme, “Linking the Caribbean for Regional Food and Nutrition Security and Rural Development”. It is regarded as the region’s premier agricultural event.
